Large theme pandal in Salt Lake during Durga Puja

Best Durga Puja Pandals in Salt Lake and New Town: FD Block, AE Block, BJ Block and Beyond

Salt Lake Durga Puja pandals are the easiest big pujas in Kolkata to visit by car, and the best of them, FD Block, AK Block, AE Block (Part 1), BJ Block and the Labony Estate puja, are within a few kilometres of each other on wide, planned roads. Almost every block in Salt Lake (Bidhannagar) runs its own puja, more than 40 in total, and New Town adds a growing set of large pujas around Action Area 1, along with the New Town Sarbojanin near the Eco Park stretch. Sreebhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, just west of Salt Lake, is the most crowded single pandal in the city and is covered in its own guide. This article lists the pandals worth planning around, how to get there by metro and road, and how to cover the area in one evening without sitting in traffic.

Why Salt Lake and New Town Pandals Are Worth the Trip

Salt Lake was laid out in the 1960s as a planned township, which means straight roads, open plots and space for pandals that would be impossible in the old city. The block pujas here are funded by residents’ associations rather than political patrons, and several have become serious award contenders with art-driven themes. New Town is newer and more spread out, but its pujas have grown quickly with the population, and parking is far easier than anywhere else in Kolkata. Both areas are also well placed for the airport and Sector V, so visitors staying in the east can pandal-hop without crossing the city. Our Salt Lake and New Town neighbourhood guide explains the layout of the blocks.

Best Salt Lake Durga Puja Pandals

FD Block

The most consistently ambitious puja in Salt Lake and a regular on award lists. FD Block builds large theme pandals, often architectural or historical in inspiration, with strong lighting and a well-run queue system. It is roughly a 15-minute walk from Bengal Chemical or City Centre metro stations on the Green Line, or a short auto ride from Karunamoyee.

AK Block

Known for creative themes and one of the larger crowds in the township. AK Block sits near the Salt Lake stadium side of the township and is easy to combine with FD Block and the Central Park area.

AE Block (Part 1)

A long-running puja with a reputation for detailed craft pandals. It is close to the Bidhannagar Municipal area and pairs with the nearby AD, AC and AB block pujas, which are smaller but pleasant to walk between.

BJ Block

BJ Block has produced some of the township’s most photographed pandals, including its 2023 theme built around the idea of Adiyogi, which drew city-wide attention. Near Karunamoyee, it is a natural first or last stop for anyone arriving by the Green Line.

Labony Estate and the Central Park Cluster

Labony Estate Sarbojanin, near the Salt Lake Central Park and the Karunamoyee bus terminus, is a large traditional puja with a fairground feel. The blocks surrounding Central Park (CK, CL, BE, BF) all host pujas, so an hour of wandering here covers several without much walking.

Other Blocks to Look Out For

EC Block, GD Block, HB Block, IA Block and CA Block all run respectable pujas and have won zone awards in different years. A useful approach is to pick one anchor (FD or BJ), then follow the lit-up roads, since the township’s grid makes it easy to see the next pandal from the last.

Best Durga Puja Pandals in New Town

New Town’s pujas are larger in footprint and easier to reach by car. The New Town Sarbojanin Durgotsav near the Action Area 1 side is the anchor, with the pujas around the DLF and Axis Mall stretch and the Eco Park approach following. Several housing complexes run their own well-produced pujas, but access is usually residents-only. Because New Town is spread out, a car or app cab is the practical way to move between pandals; the roads are wide and rarely close, and dedicated parking is more common than anywhere else in the metro area. Eco Park itself runs festive programmes and lighting through the Puja week; see our Eco Park visitor guide for timings.

How to Reach Salt Lake and New Town Pandals

By metro, the Green Line (East-West) stops at Salt Lake Stadium, Bengal Chemical, City Centre, Central Park and Karunamoyee, all inside the township, and connects to the Blue Line at Esplanade and to Sealdah. The Yellow Line to the airport now stops at Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar and is the fastest way in from the airport side; our airport metro guide has station details. New Town has no metro yet, so take the Green Line to its Salt Lake Sector V terminus and an auto or cab from there, or drive. By road, EM Bypass and VIP Road are the access routes; the VIP Road stretch near Sreebhumi is the one place expect heavy jams after dark.

A One-Evening Plan

Arrive at Karunamoyee by Green Line around 5 pm. Walk to BJ Block, then Labony Estate and the Central Park blocks. Take an auto to FD Block (allow 45 minutes there), then AK Block and AE Block. If you have a car, drive to New Town after 10 pm when Salt Lake’s internal roads quieten, cover the New Town Sarbojanin and the Action Area pujas, and end with a late meal at one of the 24-hour food streets near City Centre 2. If you are relying on the metro, finish in Salt Lake and take the last Green Line train; confirm Puja timings with Metro Railway Kolkata and the Kolkata Metro route guide.

Practical Tips

Salt Lake’s block pujas are family-friendly, with more open space and less crush than North or South Kolkata, which makes them the best choice for visitors with children or elderly relatives. Food stalls concentrate around Karunamoyee, City Centre and the big block pujas. Parking is possible on the block’s inner roads early in the evening but fills by 8 pm on Ashtami and Navami. Carry an umbrella in October and stick to the main roads if it rains; several low-lying blocks flood briefly after heavy showers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best Durga Puja pandal in Salt Lake?

FD Block is the most consistent award-winner and the most ambitious in scale, with BJ Block, AK Block and AE Block (Part 1) close behind. The best pandal in any given year depends on the theme, so check the zone award lists published during Panchami and Shashthi.

How do I reach Salt Lake pandals by metro?

Take the Green Line (East-West Metro) to Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Centre or Bengal Chemical, all of which are inside the township. From Esplanade or Sealdah the journey takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Is Sreebhumi in Salt Lake?

No. Sreebhumi Sporting Club is in Lake Town on VIP Road, just west of Salt Lake, and is not part of the Bidhannagar block pujas. It is close enough to combine with a Salt Lake evening but expect very long queues.

Can I drive to New Town pandals during Durga Puja?

Yes. New Town’s wide roads rarely close and most large pujas have parking arrangements, which is unusual in Kolkata. Avoid VIP Road near Lake Town after dark, where Sreebhumi’s crowds cause long jams.

Are Salt Lake pandals good for children and senior citizens?

They are among the best in the city for families. Open plots, wide pavements, easier parking and lower crowd density than the old city make Salt Lake a sensible choice, especially before 7 pm.
