Kolkata’s local trains are the cheapest and often the fastest way to reach the suburbs and the satellite towns around the city. This Kolkata local train guide explains how the network works. Two railway zones, Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway, run suburban services from five main terminals: Howrah, Sealdah, Shalimar, Santragachi Junction and Kolkata. Choose your line by destination. Howrah lines serve Bandel, Bardhaman and the Kharagpur direction. Sealdah main and north lines serve Dum Dum, Barasat, Naihati, Kalyani and Ranaghat. Sealdah South lines serve Budge Budge, Canning, Diamond Harbour and Namkhana. Buy a ticket before boarding, at a counter, a vending machine or the UTS mobile app. Avoid office rush hours if you carry luggage, and use the ladies compartment if you prefer. For trips inside the city, the Metro is usually easier, but for suburban journeys the local train is hard to beat.
How the Kolkata suburban rail network is organised
The Kolkata Suburban Railway is one of the largest commuter systems in India. It is operated by Eastern Railway through its Howrah and Sealdah divisions, and by South Eastern Railway through the Kharagpur division. Together the network covers several hundred stations across the city and the surrounding districts, and it carries millions of passengers every day.
It helps to think of the network as three families of lines. The Howrah family runs west and north-west from Howrah station. The Sealdah family runs north and east from Sealdah, and the Sealdah South section runs south from the same terminal. A fourth, smaller group runs from Santragachi and Shalimar towards Kharagpur and Amta on the South Eastern side.
Main local train lines and where they go
Howrah division lines
The Howrah main line heads towards Bandel and Bardhaman and passes Liluah, Bally, Dankuni and Serampore on the way. A chord line between Howrah and Bardhaman bypasses some of the slower stops. Travellers heading to Chandannagar or Bandel for a day out will use this family of trains, and our guide to day trips from Kolkata by train lists good destinations.
Sealdah main and north lines
Trains from Sealdah serve Dum Dum, Barasat, Naihati, Kalyani and Ranaghat, and branch lines continue towards Bangaon and Hasnabad. These are the routes used by many commuters from the north and east of the city. If you need to switch between Howrah and Sealdah, read our comparison of Howrah to Sealdah options first.
Sealdah South lines
The Sealdah South section runs through Ballygunge, Jadavpur and Garia and splits into branches for Budge Budge, Canning, Diamond Harbour and Namkhana. For students living near Jadavpur University and for people heading to the southern suburbs, these trains are a practical alternative to buses.
Santragachi, Shalimar and South Eastern lines
South Eastern Railway runs local services from Howrah, Santragachi and Shalimar towards Midnapore, Amta and, via a branch, Haldia. Check the origin station carefully, because Santragachi and Shalimar are separate terminals from Howrah. Our railway stations explainer shows how they differ.
Kolkata Circular Railway
The Kolkata Circular Railway, sometimes called Chakra Rail, is a roughly 42 km loop around the inner city with about 20 stations. It runs close to the Hooghly river and includes an elevated section between Princep Ghat and Majerhat. Services are limited compared with the main lines, so check the current timetable before planning a trip around it.
How to buy a local train ticket in Kolkata
Suburban travel works on a proof-of-payment basis, which means you must hold a valid ticket before you board. There are four common ways to buy one:
- At the unreserved ticket counter at the station, where single and return tickets are sold.
- From a ticket vending machine, which accepts cash or a smart card at many stations.
- From an automatic ticket vending machine, usually near the station entrance.
- On the UTS mobile app, which lets you book an unreserved ticket from your phone. Follow the app’s rules about booking distance from the station.
Fares for second-class suburban travel are low and depend on distance, so confirm the current amount at the counter or on the official Eastern Railway website instead of relying on an old figure. Ticket checks are common, and travelling without a valid ticket can lead to a penalty.
Best time to travel and how to avoid the rush
Weekday mornings between roughly 8 and 11 AM, and evenings between about 5 and 8 PM, are the busiest periods, especially on trains heading to Howrah and Sealdah in the morning and away from them in the evening. If you carry a suitcase or travel with children, aim for the middle of the day or the early morning. Weekends are usually calmer, although the number of services can change on Sundays, so check the schedule for your line.
Ladies compartments and women’s special trains
Regular local trains include compartments reserved for women, and Eastern Railway has also run women’s special services. In 2018 the Sealdah division introduced an all-women passenger train staffed by women crew. Reserved coaches are usually at the ends of the train, but positions can vary, so look for the marking on the coach.
Local train or Metro: which should you choose?
Use the Metro for most journeys inside the city. It is air-conditioned, frequent and easy to navigate, and our complete guide to getting around Kolkata explains the lines. Choose a local train when your destination is a suburban or district town that the Metro does not reach. To connect between the two, use interchange points near Sealdah and Howrah. You can also compare the best apps for commuting in Kolkata to plan multi-leg trips.
Safety and practical tips
- Keep valuables in a zipped bag and hold your phone away from open doors.
- Stand clear of the platform edge and never travel on the footboard.
- Check the destination board and the platform number twice, as several trains leave from the same terminal.
- During heavy rain, expect delays and check updates before leaving. Our monsoon commute guide has useful advice.
- Check live running status on the official railway apps before you set out.
Kolkata local train FAQs

Yes. The UTS mobile app sells unreserved tickets, and it has rules about how close you must be to the station when booking. Check the app guidance before you rely on it.
Is there a ladies-only local train in Kolkata?
Yes. Eastern Railway has run women’s special services, and regular trains carry reserved ladies compartments.
How crowded are Kolkata local trains?
Very crowded in the weekday morning and evening peaks, and much calmer in the middle of the day and at weekends.
Do local trains run all night?
No. Suburban services reduce sharply late at night, so check the last train for your line. Our guide to getting around Kolkata covers late options, and timings can change, so confirm on the official Indian Railways website.
