The Kolkata Metro Orange Line is the city’s newest south-east corridor, currently running 9.9 km along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Beleghata (Metropolitan) with nine stations. It is officially Line 6 and is often called the New Garia-Airport Metro or simply the Bypass Metro. Fares are distance-based, starting at Rs 5, and a full end-to-end ride usually falls in the Rs 20 slab. Trains run on weekdays only, from roughly 8 AM to around 8 PM, at a gap of about 20 to 25 minutes, and there is no service on Saturdays or Sundays. The line serves Garia, Mukundapur, Kalikapur, Ruby, Kasba and the Science City side of the Bypass, which makes it useful for hospital visits, south-eastern PG neighbourhoods and short Bypass commutes. Kolkata Metro Orange Line at a Glance
The Orange Line is being built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and is operated by Metro Railway, Kolkata, a zone of Indian Railways. The first section, from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby), opened to passengers in March 2024. The second section, from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata, was inaugurated on 22 August 2025, with commercial services starting a few days later. Apart from the at-grade terminus at Kavi Subhash, the operational stretch is elevated and runs above or alongside the EM Bypass, one of the city’s most congested arterial roads. Stations are named after eminent Bengali personalities, but most people still refer to them by their older locality names, such as Ruby, Mukundapur or Metropolitan, so both names are given below. The planned full corridor is roughly 30 km long, ending at an underground station beneath Kolkata Airport.
All Nine Orange Line Stations from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata
Stations are listed from the southern terminus at Kavi Subhash to the current northern terminus at Beleghata. The full ride takes around 20 minutes.
Kavi Subhash (New Garia)
Kavi Subhash is the southern terminus and sits beside New Garia suburban railway station. It serves Garia, Patuli and the fast-growing residential belt on the southern edge of the city. The station was designed as an interchange with the Blue Line, but Blue Line services at Kavi Subhash have been suspended since cracks were found in that part of the station’s supporting structure, and the Blue Line currently terminates at Shahid Khudiram while it is rebuilt. The Orange Line platforms continue to operate normally.
Satyajit Ray
Satyajit Ray is the first elevated stop and serves the residential pockets between Patuli, Pancha Sayar and Mukundapur on the eastern side of the Bypass. It is a quiet station outside office hours and a convenient boarding point for residents of the newer apartment complexes in the area.
Jyotirindra Nandi (Mukundapur)
Jyotirindra Nandi is the Mukundapur stop, and for many riders it is the most useful station on the line. Mukundapur is home to a cluster of large private hospitals, so the station sees steady traffic from patients, visitors and hospital staff. The surrounding lanes also have a good supply of PG and rental accommodation.
Kavi Sukanta (Kalikapur)
Kavi Sukanta serves Kalikapur, Ajoynagar and the neighbourhoods along the stretch of the Bypass between Mukundapur and Ruby. It is a practical stop for residents of Purbachal and the eastern side of Santoshpur.
Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby)
Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stands at Ruby crossing, one of the busiest junctions on the Bypass, named after the hospital on the corner. It was the northern terminus from March 2024 to August 2025. The station is well placed for Kasba, Anandapur and the office and hospital buildings around the crossing, and buses in every direction stop nearby.
VIP Bazar
VIP Bazar serves the Kasba and Tiljala side of the Bypass north of Ruby. It is useful for the residential lanes and small industrial units in this part of the city, which have historically been poorly served by public transport other than buses and autos.
Ritwik Ghatak
Ritwik Ghatak is located near the Bantala Road junction on the Bypass. It serves the eastern fringe of Tiljala and the roads leading towards the wetlands and the leather complex further east.
Barun Sengupta
Barun Sengupta is the stop closest to the Science City end of the Bypass and the large hotels near the Park Circus connector. If you are heading to Science City or towards Park Circus and Topsia, this is the station to use, followed by a short walk or auto ride.
Beleghata (Metropolitan)
Beleghata is the current northern terminus, located near the Metropolitan housing area and just short of the Chingrighata crossing. From here, Beleghata, Phoolbagan and the southern edge of Salt Lake are a short road journey away. Until the line is extended, office-goers heading to Salt Lake Sector V complete the final leg by bus, auto or app cab.
Orange Line Fares: How Much Does Kavi Subhash to Beleghata Cost?
Orange Line fares follow the distance-based slabs used across Kolkata Metro. The minimum fare is Rs 5 for a short hop, and the full 9.9 km journey from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata falls in the Rs 20 slab. A mid-length trip, such as Mukundapur to Ruby, costs less. Orange Line Timings: A Weekday-Only Service
Timings are the biggest difference between the Orange Line and the rest of the network, so plan around them carefully.
Monday to Friday
Since the Beleghata extension opened, the Orange Line has run a weekday timetable that starts at around 8 AM and ends at around 8 PM, with trains roughly every 20 to 25 minutes. There is no separate high-frequency peak service, so a missed train can mean a wait of 20 minutes or more. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
There are no Orange Line services on Saturdays or Sundays at present. Metro Railway occasionally announces special or reduced schedules around public holidays and major festivals such as Durga Puja, so check the latest notice if you plan to travel on a holiday.
How to Connect from the Orange Line to the Rest of Kolkata
The Orange Line does not yet offer a working interchange with another metro line, so it helps to know the onward options at each end.
At Kavi Subhash: New Garia suburban railway station is right next door, with local trains on the Sealdah South section towards Ballygunge and Sealdah in one direction and Sonarpur in the other. At Beleghata: buses and autos run along the Bypass towards Chingrighata, Salt Lake and Sector V, and across towards Beleghata and Sealdah. An app cab to Sector V usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic at Chingrighata. At intermediate stations such as Ruby and Mukundapur, the Bypass bus network is the easiest way to continue north or south.
Orange Line Extension to Sector V, New Town and the Airport
The next section takes the line from Beleghata through Gour Kishore Ghosh (Chingrighata) and Nalban (near Nicco Park) to IT Centre in Salt Lake Sector V, where it will interchange with the Green Line. This stretch was held up for years by a 366 metre gap in the viaduct over the Chingrighata crossing, which RVNL finally closed in 2026, as we reported in our Chingrighata update. Kolkata Metro has said it is aiming to open the Beleghata to IT Centre section by the end of December 2026, subject to trial runs and safety clearance.
Beyond Sector V, the line will run through New Town, with stations at Nabadiganta, Nazrul Tirtha, Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Eco Park, Mother’s Wax Museum and City Centre 2, among others, before turning onto VIP Road and ending at Jai Hind, an underground station beneath Kolkata Airport shared with the Yellow Line. Who Should Use the Kolkata Metro Orange Line Today
In its current form, the Orange Line works best for three groups. Patients and visitors heading to the hospitals around Mukundapur and Ruby get a fast, air-conditioned ride that avoids the Bypass traffic. Students and working professionals living in Garia, Mukundapur, Kalikapur and Kasba, areas covered in our South Kolkata PG guide, can use it for weekday commutes along the Bypass. And anyone travelling between New Garia and Science City or Metropolitan can save a significant amount of time at peak hours. For weekend trips, late evenings or journeys into central Kolkata, a bus, cab or the Blue Line remains the more practical choice until the line is extended.
Practical Tips for Riding the Orange Line
Check the timetable before leaving home, because a 20 to 25 minute gap matters, and remember that nothing runs on weekends. Elevated stations have lifts and escalators, but allow a few extra minutes to reach the platform. A smart card or QR ticket saves time at the counter. Keep a backup plan for the final leg at Beleghata, especially if you are heading to Sector V for a fixed office start time.
